All local veterans are invited to join a celebration held in their honor at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Sterling Heights Community Center located at 40250 Dodge Park Road. Those who wish to express their appreciation to these brave men and women are also encouraged to attend.
41-A District Court Judge Stephen Sierawski will emcee the annual ceremony which includes remarks from veterans and Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor and other elected leaders, music from the Stevenson High School Choir, and a 21-gun salute by the Sterling Heights Police Honor Guard. The ceremony will feature special remarks from keynote speaker Doug “Odie” Slocum who retired as a Brigadier General in 2019 with 35 years of service in the Air Force and the Air National Guard.
“As we gather to commemorate Veterans Day in Sterling Heights, we proudly honor the men and women who have selflessly served our country. Our community veterans embody the values of courage and commitment, and this annual event is an opportunity to express our deepest gratitude,” said Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “Their sacrifices inspire us, and we stand united to show our support for these heroes, past and present, who have fought for our freedom.”
Doug "Odie" Slocum is a distinguished leader and fighter pilot, widely recognized for his notable contributions in both the military and community development. Serving as the former Commanding General of the 127th Wing and Selfridge Air National Guard Base, his leadership brought national recognition, earning awards as the top Air National Guard Wing, the most efficient aerial tanker Wing, and the third-ever Air National Guard Wing to receive the Meritorious Unit Award. His leadership style, often described as "violent positivity," is celebrated for its impact.
Beyond his military service, Odie's influence extends to his remarkable community involvement. He has cultivated valuable partnerships, spearheaded pioneering projects, and earned accolades such as DTE's Environmental Steward of the Year and induction into the Macomb County Hall of Fame. With a distinguished career as a fighter pilot boasting more than 4,100 flight hours, he ranks among the top 1 percent of experienced fighter pilots. His innovative safety initiatives led to his induction into the Air Force Safety Hall of Fame. Odie is an active advocate for veterans, contributing his service on various boards and pursuing a run for federal Congress in Michigan during the 2020 election cycle. He resides in Macomb Township with his family.
The Sterling Heights Veterans Day Ceremony is planned in collaboration with local area veterans. Lunch and cupcakes will be provided following the ceremony.
