[ARCHIVED] Sterling Heights City Council Appoints Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski as New Assistant City Manager

The City of Sterling Heights is proud to announce the appointment of Chief of Police Dale Dwojakowski as the new Assistant City Manager (ACM), effective December 9, 2024.

Following althorough nationwide recruitment process led by the Michigan Municipal League (MML) and a comprehensive assessment process, Dwojakowski’s appointment was confirmed by the Sterling Heights City Council at their Dec. 3 meeting.

As a proud Sterling Heights native and Henry Ford II High School graduate, Dwojakowski brings a distinguished 28-year career with the Sterling Heights Police Department to this key administrative role. Over the past seven years as chief of police, Dwojakowski has demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovative problem-solving, and a deep commitment to community service.

“Dale’s extensive experience in law enforcement, his proven administrative expertise, and his dedication to the residents of Sterling Heights make him an outstanding choice for this position,” said City Manager Mark Vanderpool. “His collaborative leadership style and accomplishments will greatly benefit the city as we continue to enhance the services provided by our largest departments.”

The newly created ACM position will oversee the Sterling Heights Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works.

As Chief of Police, Dwojakowski played a vital role in maintaining Sterling Heights’ status as Michigan’s safest large city through consistent crime rate reductions. He guided the department through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with innovative strategies to ensure the safety of officers and the community. He also demonstrated strong leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by helping develop the City’s DEI strategic plan and formation of the African American Coalition.

Dwojakowski’s commitment to community engagement is evidenced through the development of the SMART Moves anti-drug and anti-violence program, which reaches over 1,500 students annually. He also led the Police Department to earn accreditation from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and launched key programs such as the Peer Support Program for officers and the Sterling Heights Drug-Free Coalition, enhancing support for both the department and the community. The City plans to embark on accreditation in both the Fire and DPW Departments continuing the City’s commitment to excellence.  Beyond the Police Department, Dwojakowski played a leadership role overseeing the city’s 2030 and 2040 visioning plans resulting in over $100 million dollars in quality-of-life investments across the City resulting in transformational improvements.

Dwojakowski holds a master’s degree from the American College of Education and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University. His advanced training includes completion of the FBI National Academy, Eastern Michigan University’s School of Police Staff and Command, and Harvard University’s Executive Certificate in Public Leadership. He also serves as an adjunct professor and contributes to criminal justice advisory boards across the region.
