Today, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her appointment of Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Executive Committee, further strengthening Sterling Heights’ role as a leader in economic development and business growth throughout the state. The Executive Committee provides policy direction and guidance to the MEDC regarding economic development programs and initiatives and works to ensure the MEDC performs and is recognized as one of the top ten state economic development organizations in the nation.
Mayor Taylor, a lifelong resident of Macomb County and Sterling Heights’ mayor since 2014, brings over a decade of municipal leadership experience to the MEDC Executive Committee. Under his leadership, Sterling Heights has become one of Michigan’s fastest-growing cities and a major hub for advanced manufacturing, technology, and innovation. His appointment reflects the city’s growing influence in shaping Michigan’s economic future.
“This appointment reflects the high level of economic development activity that takes place in our community every day,” said Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool. “I have no doubt that Mayor Taylor’s leadership and important work with this group will help position the region, including Sterling Heights, for continued growth and prosperity.”

The MEDC Executive Committee oversees the state’s lead economic development agency, providing strategic direction on programs that drive job creation, entrepreneurship, business retention, and community development throughout Michigan.
The MEDC Executive Committee is comprised of leaders from the public and private sectors, representing diverse industries and regions across Michigan. Mayor Taylor’s appointment is effective immediately and expires April 5, 2027.
