One of the library’s sharpest minds celebrated a milestone birthday.

On Sept. 24, Shelby Township resident L. Broas “Bud” Mann turned 100 years old, culminating two weeks of festivities with a party thrown by the Creative Writers Workshop, which meets monthly at the library.

Bud always had an interest in writing, having done technical writing during his 50-year career as an engineer at Chrysler. But he didn’t truly put pen to paper until after retiring in 2001. His first novel, The Journal of Levi Broas: 1837-1838 New York to Michigan (Volume 1), was published when he was 88 years old.

“My first book was published in 2013, but I started work on that much earlier,” he said. “It takes a couple of years for me to write a book.”

Since the release of his first novel, Bud has published eight works, ranging from historical fiction to travel anthologies. He also has several short stories featured in Sterling Script, an annual collection showcasing writers from Sterling Heights and surrounding cities.

Encompassed by friends and family, the room was filled with laughter as stories were shared, celebrating Bud’s joyous personality, quick wit, and easygoing nature—even when offering unflinching critiques during Creative Writers Workshop meetings.

As for advice to keep the creative spark alive, Bud keeps it simple.

“The first thing is to believe you can write. I always keep in mind that I can write whatever I think and go back and change it. It emboldens you to put in down on paper.”

While thanking his friends and family for celebrating with him, Bud fielded questions from the crowd, showcasing his nimble mind, humor, and gratitude in equal measure.

“What advice do you give for living a long life?” one member asked.

Without missing a beat, Bud replied, “Be careful how you select your parents and your life. Those are the two sources of longevity for me.”

As the group laughed, he launched a signature smile and scanned the room. “And having great groups of friends,” he added.
