[ARCHIVED] Sterling Heights Residents and Businesses Unite for 47th Annual Food Drive

Food Drive 47

The City of Sterling Heights Department of Public Works (DPW) is leading the 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive, continuing a decades-long tradition of supporting families in need, as the federal shutdown and temporary suspension of benefits create added challenges for residents.

What began nearly five decades ago as one DPW employee’s simple act of kindness has grown into a citywide tradition honoring the late Ken Stempowski, whose commitment to helping others continues to inspire residents and businesses alike.

“Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change,” said DPW Director Mike Moore. “This food drive has always been about neighbors supporting neighbors, and this year, that support means more than ever.”

This year, the City is expanding its reach by partnering with the Chaldean Community Foundation to connect with more residents and provide food assistance to families experiencing hardship, particularly as many continue to feel the effects of the federal government shutdown and the temporary suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

“The Chaldean Community Foundation is pleased to work alongside the City of Sterling Heights to address food insecurity in the region,” said Martin Manna, president of the Chaldean Community Foundation.

From Nov. 3 through Dec. 17, donation bins will be available in all public city buildings, including City Hall, the Community Center, the Library, Police Department, the Senior Center, and the Department of Public Works facility. The City will also collect donations at its signature community event, Sterling Christmas, on Saturday, Dec. 6 in Dodge Park.

“Sterling Heights residents and businesses continue to rise to the occasion when our community faces challenges,” said Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “By expanding this year’s food drive in partnership with the Chaldean Community Foundation, we’re helping ensure that everyone in Sterling Heights has access to the resources they need during this difficult time.”

Nonperishable food donations and monetary contributions are both accepted. All donations benefit the Community Food Bank of Macomb County, which supplies food pantries and meal providers across Macomb County.
