Upton House

Spice of the Month Club

Looking to spice up your cooking? Sign up for our Spice of the Month Club and get inspired to try new flavors. Participants will receive a different kit each month containing a sample of the spice along with some fun facts and a recipe to make at home. Pickup begins on the dates listed below and continues for one week (while supplies last). 

All Ages Programming

Crankie Theater

Saturday, Feb. 7 from 2-4 p.m. Register online.

Dive into the wild and wonderful world of Crankies, a visual storytelling device also known as a moving panorama. A Crankie is simply a box with two spools that are "cranked" to bring movement to an illustrated scroll. In this workshop, we will learn all about this delightful form of folk art while making our very own Crankie boxes and story scrolls from recylcled materials.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Sunday, Feb. 8 from 2-3 p.m. No registration required.

Let's celebrate the year of the Horse! You are invited to join our Lunar New Year celebration. Come and enjoy a variety of special activities, including legend telling, fun games, yummy snacks, and paper craft projects that fit the Lunar New Year theme. Activities will be performed by Southern Michigan Chinese School and Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning. All ages are welcome!

Remember Us? Forgotten Presidents

There have been 46 Presidents of the United States, but how many do you really know? We are all familiar with Washington and Lincoln, but how about Fillmore or Arthur? Pull these former leaders from the dustbin of history and find out about what makes these men interesting and how they helped to shape the nation we have today! Join us as we welcome back historian Andrew Kercher for this special presentation in honor of President's Day.

Adulting 101

There's no official manual for being a Competent Human, but a little knowledge can go a long way! Whether you're an aspiring adult or just need to brush up on your life skills, these hands-on lessons will give you the tools you need to get by in the real world. This session will cover cooking on a budget.

Myth of the Model City

Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 6-7 p.m. Register online.

In honor of Black History Month, this presentation of William Wall-Winkel of the Detroit Historical Society examines the causes and events of the 1967 uprising in Detroit. It provides essential context for understanding what led to the riot/rebellion and the resulting unrest. Additionally, the lecture seeks to dispel many of the enduring myths surrounding 1967.

Adult Scavenger Hunt

Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. No registration required.

Part fun game, part introduction to library resources, this scavenger hunt runs all day, but the first 25 people who finish will get a prize! This is for ages 18+. 

Teens & Tweens Programming

Tabletop RPG - 16+ Session

Saturday, Feb. 14 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Register online.

Join us for role-playing fun for those aged 16 years and older. Play a different role-playing game every two months from a diverse range of genres, such as fantasy, horror, mystery, sci-fi, and more! We provide the character sheets, dice, pencils, and food. Just bring your love of adventure!

Tweening: A Parent & Tween Night Out

Monday, Feb. 23 from 6-7 p.m. Register online.

Come out to the library for a night full of fun crafts for both tweens and their adults to complete! This month we'll be creating a colorful textured yarn-wrapped pencil holder or vase. Please only register the child's name, to be accompanied by one grown-up. No younger siblings please.

Teen Community Service

Looking to earn volunteer hours and make a difference? Join our monthly Teen Community Service Project! Each month features a new way to give back.
