[ARCHIVED] Sterling Heights to recognize Black History Month

Sterling Heights is designating February 2020 as Black History Month in the City of Sterling Heights.

Black History Month is a nationwide campaign celebrating achievements by African Americans and for recognizing the central role of African Americans throughout U.S. history. The City of Sterling Heights invites all residents and surrounding community to celebrate the many contributions of African Americans through community events.

The Halo on Hall Road in Sterling Heights will be lit yellow, red, green, and black to honor the many important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Lighting of The Halo will start February 6 through February 9, 2020.

The Sterling Heights Public Library will host a free screening and discussion of Evanston’s Living History with Craig Dudnick, the filmmaker, on Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sterling Heights Library. Discover the story of a community’s greatest generation and their courageous fight to free Evanston from the bondage of racial discrimination.

The Sterling Heights Ethnic Community Committee will also attend the Macomb’s Celebration of Black Excellence, a public event, to celebrate Black History in Macomb County.

“The City of Sterling Heights values every resident and we are especially honored to recognize Black History Month on behalf of the thousands of Blacks and African Americans that call Sterling Heights home. A diverse population and inclusive spirit has enriched our City greatly,” stated Mayor Michael C. Taylor.
