In light of Executive Order 2020-59 issued last Friday by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the city of Sterling Heights will extend closure of municipal buildings through at least May 15 to protect the health and safety of both City employees and residents.
The affected buildings include City Hall, Sterling Heights Public Library, Community Center, Senior Center, Nature Center, Department of Public Works and the two Recycling Centers. Although the major and neighborhood parks remain open, amenities such as park pavilions, playscapes, basketball courts, the skate park, soccer fields and park restrooms remain closed.
All non-essential building inspections remain on hold.
Curbside trash, yard waste and recycling service will continue on normally scheduled pick-up days. The Sterling Heights Police Department Front Desk remains open for handling resident reports. Residents should still dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies, and first responders including police and fire remain on duty around the clock.
Residents with questions are encouraged to email cityhall@sterling-heights.net. Residents are also encouraged to visit the City’s “At-Home Services” web page at www.sterling-heights.net/athomeservices for a comprehensive list of services they can utilize without ever leaving home. These options include everything from paying taxes and bills online to pulling permits and licensing online and even checking out books and movies from the library or getting help with homework over the internet.
In addition, the City has established a hotline for seniors in need of assistance or for residents requiring help completing their census during this time. Those who require assistance can call 586-446-2757 and a city representative will respond. The City continues to partner with other agencies at the federal, state and county level to ensure we continue to be prepared.
“We thank our residents for their continued patience and cooperation during this extended period of closure, “said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “While we continue to do everything we can to protect our employees and our community from the spread of COVID-19, the City’s leadership team is already working to prepare an extensive plan to safely return employees to our buildings in anticipation that Governor Whitmer may allow non-essential governmental operations to resume after May 15.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s coronavirus web page at www.sterling-heights.net/communityinfo for best practices to prevent virus transmission as well as answers to frequently asked questions and a list of resources for our business community.”
City management will continue to closely monitor the situation and update residents on when normal City operations will resume.
