[ARCHIVED] Public Library Connects the Community with Summer Reading

The Sterling Heights Public Library is celebrating reading, and consistency, with their 2021 Summer Reading Program.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown has left many people feeling disconnected. Families have had to skip vacations. Children have missed seeing friends at school. The world, and Sterling Heights, is returning back to normal, but it is not the normal we once knew.

The consistency of routine and the ability to accomplish small, actionable goals is more important now than ever. The summer reading program will not only keep kids reading through the summer and help them be more prepared for school in the fall, but can also help provide a sense of normalcy. For patrons who have participated in summer reading in the past, the program helps to mark the summer season. For those who haven’t participated before, this is a way to build routine and set goals.

This year, the Sterling Heights Public Library celebrates animal stories with a Tails and Tales-themed summer reading program. The program runs June 7 to August 7 and will feature reading goals and prizes to inspire patrons to read all summer long. There are programs for babies, listeners, readers, special needs, teens and adults. Patrons can come into the library to participate, or track their progress on an online platform.

In addition to tracking reading goals, the Sterling Heights Public Library is featuring animal-centered events that build on the Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program. For example, Animal Tails will enthrall young readers and listeners with animal stories, while Birdwatching and Beyond will provide an introduction to birdwatching. An outdoor finale party will be held on August 28 to celebrate all the accomplishments that have been reached over the summer.

Visit the library website at or call 586-446-2665 to find out more and register for these fun and free events.
