On Sunday September 27, just before 11:00 p.m. the Sterling Heights Fire Department was called for a possible structure fire in a strip mall at 11500 15 Mile (at Dodge Park). Upon arrival, crews were confronted with heavy blowing smoke coming from several of the businesses on the west end of the complex, making it difficult to determine which business was on fire. After determining that the fire was coming from Chinese Cuisine Restaurant, fire crews forced entry and began attacking the fire, which had engulfed the rear of the restaurant.
One firefighter sustained a significant electrical shock while operating a hose line inside the structure. He continued working until the fire was knocked down, then was evaluated at the scene by paramedics. As a precaution, he was taken to Beaumont Troy where he was further evaluated then released. He returned to the scene.
Fire crews from all five Sterling Heights fire stations responded to the fire. Shelby Township and Warren were called to fill two fire stations, then Warren further assisted by sending their crew to the scene to relieve some of the Sterling Heights crews who were dealing with extensive overhaul on the roof of the building.
The Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire which is estimated to exceed $200,000 in damage. The restaurant sustained significant damage and will be closed for an extended amount of time. The other businesses should be back open shortly.
