[ARCHIVED] Sterling Heights looking for Muralist Submissions for public art

Sterling Heights has been home to public art for decades, and since 2018 began investing in murals, with input from the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, to bring art, color and creativity to formerly blank or uninspiring facades throughout the City.

Now, the city of Sterling Heights invites mural artists to submit designs for consideration to be installed at a highly visible location in Sterling Heights this summer. The chosen muralist will be commissioned by the City to install a large outdoor mural to its collection.

The mural will be promoted to City residents and artists through print and social media and highlighted in numerous community arts and culture events, as well as the City’s Digital Art Map. Artists can learn more about the City’s existing Public Art collection at sterling-heights.net/publicart

It is also the hope of the City that the artist or artists will take into consideration the inclusivity aspect of its Visioning 2030 vision statement and guiding principles when proposing their design:

Guiding Principles:

  • Safe, well maintained and desirable neighborhoods enhanced by great schools
  • Plentiful leisure and recreation opportunities featuring fully utilized parks
  • Abundant pathways for biking and walking
  • Focal points that are both public and private to serve as destinations for residents and visitors
  • Well maintained and aesthetically pleasing roads and green spaces
  • Successful, vibrant and attractive commercial centers with unique offerings
  • Destination for high-tech and emerging industries and entrepreneurs 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. DESCRIPTION // Brief one-page narrative description of the concept for the work. Include in the narrative the mural’s scale, types of material and colors.
  2. VISUAL REPRESENTATION // Visual representation of the mural in any of the following formats:
    1. Colored graphic or artist illustration depicting the project.
    2. A model of the proposal.
    3. Digital image/rendering.
  3. INSTALLATION // Details should be provided on how the artist plans to handle the timeline required to complete mural for a late summer/early fall 2023 installation and ribbon cutting. The total area of the outside wall is 144’ wide x 24’ high. The mural will be applied to a painted brick surface.
  4. RESUME // A current resume including any past experience with public art.
  5. REFERENCES // Up to three references including name, project type, contact number and email addresses.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists must be 18 years of age and over.

BUDGET: Maximum budget of $30,000; Proposed cost must include all aspects, design, labor, materials, including scaffolding and pre-install power washing of surface.
