The Sterling Heights CommUNITY Alliance and the Sterling Heights Public Library are teaming up to host Page Turners Social, a casual, social event where adults of all ages can read, relax and relate with fellow bibliophiles. The free event will take place on Monday, April 1 from 6-7:45 p.m. at the public library.

The goal of the event is to promote a sense of community while offering an alternative to traditional book clubs where everyone is required to read the same book. At Page Turners Social, participants will bring their own book of choice – or choose one from the library shelves – read for 20 minutes silently, talk to the other readers about what they’ve read or about books in general, then repeat the process.

“Page Turners Social is our version of a growing trend of ‘silent book clubs’ across the nation,” said CommUNITY Alliance Secretary Michael Mazur. “It retains the social aspect of a book club, but adds more choice for readers who have their own favorite authors and genres.”

Event organizers are transforming the library’s programming center into a relaxed, comfortable space with a virtual fireplace, ambient music and even some free literary-themed mocktails. Participants are encouraged to bring their own blanket, cushion and/or pillow if they prefer to take to the floor instead of a traditional chair.

“The library’s vision is an engaged community where all can discover, learn and grow,” said Natasha Rogers who heads up public relations and programs for the library. “We’re always looking for ways we can be inviting to our community through engaging spaces and services, so Page Turners Social is a perfect fit. We’re excited to welcome adults, young and old, to join us for this exciting new event.”

Anyone 17 years of age or older can register to attend. Those interested can register for free at bit.ly/PageTurnersSocial (NOTE: the link is case sensitive).
