The City of Sterling Heights Office of the City Clerk is seeking applicants for the position of election inspector. Successful candidates for the job will be required to attend two training sessions and work on Election Day - Tuesday March 8, 2016.
According to City Clerk Mark Carufel, election inspectors process voters at an assigned polling location, assist voters with voting procedures and the operation of voting equipment. Election Inspectors also complete forms, process voters using a laptop computer, maintain order in the polls and work under the direction of a Precinct Chairperson. Election inspectors need to follow written and verbal directions, maintain accurate records and work as a team throughout Election Day. Inspectors must be at their assigned polling location on Election Day at 6 a.m. and stay through the closure of the polls and completion of election paperwork, which is approximately at 9 to 10:30 p.m.
Candidates for the position must be registered voters in the State of Michigan. High school students age 16 and 17 are eligible to be election inspectors but will not work more than 10 hours on Election Day. Election inspectors must be able to read, write, type and speak English and be physically capable of setting up voting booths and carrying supplies. Qualified applicants must have recent and relevant experience operating a laptop computer.
Successful candidates must attend a 90 minute election inspector training course and a 2 hour electronic poll book / laptop training course. The position pays a flat rate of $150 for Election Day. High School students are paid $75 for Election Day when not volunteering for service credit. Inspectors are also paid $20 for each training course attended. “This position is a great way for residents to become involved in this community’s democratic process,” Carufel said.
Applicants may apply in person at the City Clerk’s Office, located on the upper level of Sterling Heights’ City Hall, 40555 Utica Road (corner of Utica and Dodge Park Roads), between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
