[ARCHIVED] Sterling Heights Library Walkway Transformed by Colorful Public Art

Library Pillars Ribbon Cutting 2025

The Sterling Heights Public Library just got a bold new look thanks to two vibrant public art installations now featured along its main walkway. City Council members, the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, and the Sterling Heights Library Board gathered this week alongside artists Tatum Lorway and Wendy Popko to officially cut the ribbon and celebrate the newly completed artwork.

The colorful enhancements include a hand-painted mural along the outdoor Library pillars and a custom-painted bench—each designed to reflect the values and identity of the Sterling Heights community.

The pillar mural, titled “Rooted in Word” and painted by Tatum Lorway, is a striking visual collection of books, genres, and symbolic objects representing learning, growth, and self-improvement. Lorway also incorporated elements of floriography—the Victorian-era language of flowers—selecting plants that symbolically reflect each genre featured. Lorway’s mural design was selected through a Call for Artists process organized by the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, which reviewed submissions and chose the winning concept based on artistic merit and community alignment.

Nearby, a newly painted book-shaped bench by Wendy Popko adds another splash of color to the space. Her design reflects key themes that define Sterling Heights, including sustainability, safety, inclusivity, and active living—all brought together in a colorful and inviting composition

“Projects like these pillars turn everyday walkways into cultural moments—places that spark curiosity and connection,” said Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “Whether you're heading to the library, enjoying a stroll, or attending a community event, these painted pillars are a reminder that creativity lives here. Sterling Heights has made a strong commitment to expanding public art throughout the city—not just for beautification, but to create spaces that reflect who we are as a community.”

Commissioned in partnership with the Sterling Heights Arts Commission, the new art installations are part of the City’s broader commitment to placemaking and public engagement. The painted pillars and bench are located in the outdoor space between the Sterling Heights Public Library and Police Department, now joined by new outdoor games and musical instruments to encourage connection and play.
