Celebrate Black History Month in Sterling Heights

The city of Sterling Heights, in collaboration with members of the City’s African American Coalition, is hosting a month-long series of events in celebration of Black History Month. In honor of its 100th anniversary, the 2026 Black History Month theme is, “A Century of Black History Commemoration,” and the following events are aimed at increasing local recognition of and engagement in Black History Month:

  • The Sterling Heights African American Coalition will be assembling a special Black History Month display for the library’s lobby for the month of February.

  • Feb. 5, 10 a.m. – King Richard moving screening – Armed with a bold vision and 78-page plan, Richard Williams sets out to make history – training his daughters, Venus and Serena, on the court of Compton and guiding them to defy the odds and redefine the game of tennis.

  • Feb. 7, 10 a.m. – When You Kiss a Butterfly author visit - a magical storytime with author Tatiaira Herndon as she reads her heartwarming children's book. Centered around the idea that even the smallest acts can spark big change, this uplifting story explores the Butterfly Effect in a way that's perfect for children ages 2-11. This inspiring event includes a craft.

  • Feb. 23, 6 p.m. – Black History Month Dinner – The Sterling Heights African American Coalition will be hosting the 3rd annual dinner for a night of celebration and reflection at the Sterling Heights Community Center. Join us for a night of celebration and reflection. Tickets are $45 per person and include a delicious full dinner provided by Chef Ty's Catering, performances and inspiring guest speakers including Heaster Wheeler, a lifelong advocate, mentor, and speaker. He is an entrepreneur and founder of Heaster Wheeler Speaks where he empowers change through leadership, innovation, and impactful solutions. Mr. Wheeler will share his thoughts on "The Impact of Black History and Life on the Modern World." A portion of each ticket sold will assist in funding our 2026 scholarship initiative.

  • Feb. 24, 6 p.m. – Myth of the Model City – this presentation by William Wall-Winkel of the Detroit Historical Society examines the causes and events of the 1967 uprising in Detroit. It provides essential context for understanding what led to the riot/rebellion and the resulting unrest. Additionally, the lecture seeks to dispel many of the enduring myths surrounding ’67.

  • Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m. – Macomb Celebration of Black Excellence Awards Gala  – members of the Sterling Heights African American Coalition will be attending the 8th annual event where community leaders honor the rich legacy of African Americans in Macomb County. They will be supporting Coalition Chair Diana Bledsoe who is an award nominee.

  • The Halo on M-59’s Golden Corridor will be lit with a red/yellow/green chase the weekend of Feb. 7 and 8 in honor of Black History Month.

“Black History Month remains a vital time for recognizing and celebrating the numerous achievements and contributions African Americans have made in shaping our nation,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “In 2026, as we mark the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, we're reinforcing our commitment by hosting educational and inspirational events that emphasize the local significance of this milestone celebration.”
