Music in the Park, Sterling Heights’ famed summer concert series, is expanding to 12 weeks of Thursday night shows this summer season — making it one of the largest municipally run concert series in Metro Detroit.
Sterling Heights Parks & Recreation Department is proud to bring back Music in the Park beginning on Thursday, June 2 and running through Thursday, August 25. The show will kick off at 7 p.m. every Thursday from June through August with the exception of July 28, which is the week of Sterlingfest.
Music in the Park will once again coincide with the Dodge Park Farmers Market, the City’s farmers market that launched in 2015. Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlois noted the robust success of the concert series along with the new farmers market in 2015. So much so, he said, that residents were asking for even more outdoor music opportunities this year.
“We received such tremendous response from our residents and program supporters during last summer’s shows and through the winter that expanding the concert series just made sense,” Langlois said “We’re very much looking forward to the 2016 season and hope to see big crowds again this season.”
This year’s concert series will once again bring a variety of professional bands to entertain crowds, including favorites such as Air Margaritaville, Steve King and the Dittilies and Mega 80’s as well as new acts including Denise Davis and the Motor City Sensations and Eddy & the Breakers.
Each week will feature children’s entertainment, such as airbrush tattoos, face painting, balloon twister and other forms of family fun. The concerts and market will also be complimented by a special event to be held once a month throughout the summer.
• “School’s Out Summer Party” - June 23: Includes a face painter, bounce house and an outdoor movie “Minions” after the concert ends.
• “Cool Car Rally” - July 7: Features cool cars from all eras, airbrush tattoos and a bounce house.
• “Wild West Party” – Aug. 18: Includes a photo booth with western themed props, a western-themed inflatable obstacle course and a cheeseburger cook-off.
Sponsors of this year’s Music in the Park series include Jet’s Pizza® (presenting sponsor), United VIP Credit Union, Buff Whelan Chevrolet, Sterling Football Club, Sterling Heights Softball Club, Warren Consolidated Schools, McDonald’s of Sterling Heights, Sterling Heights Community Foundation and Independent Opportunities of Michigan.
Jet’s Pizza® will have pizza available for purchase at all concerts with the exception of June 23, when the Chicken Shack food truck will be on-site for food purchases. Attendees looking for a bite to eat can also take advantage of food trucks and food vendors at the Dodge Park Farmers Market, only steps from the concert area.
