[ARCHIVED] Police Department to honor Law Day with ceremony on May 19 during national Police Week

Sterling Heights Police Department will be conducting its annual Law Day Ceremony on Thursday, May 19 at 10 a.m.

What: Sterling Heights Police Department will be conducting its annual Law Day Ceremony.

Who: Remarks will be provided by Mayor Michael C. Taylor as well as Chief of Police John Berg.

When: 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 19.

Where: Council Chambers at Richard J. Notte City Center, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights MI, 48013.

Details: In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation, which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Sterling Heights Police Department celebrates law day either the week prior to, or the week after the Police Week, so that some of our officers may attend the memorial service in Washington D.C. This year, as SHPD is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the department, Chief Berg will be paying tribute to every man and woman who has worn the SHPD badge.

In its history, the Sterling Heights Police Department has lost 3 officers in the line of duty:

• Officer Leroy Imus on 12/02/1971, who was killed while he was on a traffic stop and then hit by a drunk driver.
• Captain Norman Stolzenfeld on 10/7/1983, who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty.
• Officer Mark Sawyers on 06/05/2004, who was killed in an ambush by gunfire as he completed a police report.
