The City of Sterling Heights recently volunteered to become a Commemorative Partner with the United States of America Vietnam War 50th Commemoration. Over the next three years, the City of Sterling Heights will be assisting Sterling Heights residents and businesses in thanking and honoring Vietnam Veterans and their families.
Commemorative Partners participate in the Commemoration by planning and conducting events and activities that recognize Vietnam veterans and their families’ service, valor and sacrifice. Upon official receipt of becoming a Commemorative Partner, Sterling Heights joined a team of more than 9,000 organizations dedicated to assisting the nation in thanking and honoring 7.2 million living Vietnam Veterans and the 9 million of those families who have served.
As part of the program, the City of Sterling Heights will host two events per year from 2016 to 2018 to honor Vietnam Veterans. In 2016, the Arts Commission agreed to theme the upcoming Memorial Day Parade “Forget Me Not” in remembrance of Vietnam Veterans. Later this year, the City’s Veterans Day ceremony will be called “Remembering Vietnam.” The City will announce its 2017 and 2018 events to honor Vietnam Veterans at the beginning of each respective year.
At the May 17 Sterling Heights City Council meeting, Community Relations Director Bridget Doyle presented the Mayor and City Council with a commemorative flag and certificate sent to the City from the Department of Defense. Also present in support was VFW Post 6250 and American Legion Post 326 Commander Stephan Bilan.
“In Sterling Heights, we never take for granted the men and women who have valiantly served our Country to protect our freedom,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “I’m proud that we have joined other cities and organizations in formally recognizing those who served in the Vietnam War as well as their families.”For more information about the events or the Commemorative Partner Program, contact Community Relations Director Bridget Doyle at (586) 446-2471 or email email@example.com.
