[ARCHIVED] City announces Riverland Pedestrian Bridge to be replaced this year

In an effort to improve existing walk and hike/bike paths and promote outdoor recreation throughout the city, the City of Sterling Heights is replacing the Riverland Pedestrian Bridge later this year.

The new bridge to be constructed will be open-style with a wood deck, according to Department of Public Works Director Mike Moore. Following a bid process, the award of construction for the project is slated for September. The old bridge structure will be removed in the fall and the new bridge will be set in the winter. Minor path work is set for the spring and will complete the project.

“The City of Sterling Heights is committed to improving recreational opportunities for residents,” said Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “It’s our goal to provide a more robust hike/bike and walking path for not only our residents, but the users from around the region that use this this trail on a regular basis. This new bridge will be a welcomed improvement to the Clinton River Trail.”

The previous Riverland Bridge was closed earlier this year due to structural concerns. In the interim, path users can continue to utilize a walkway over the Clinton River on the south side of Riverland Drive. In a further commitment to safety, earlier this year the City added an improved, raised painted crosswalk across Riverland Drive to highlight pedestrian right-of-way.

DPW will be adding signage this month to signify the construction of a new bridge at either end of the hike/bike path, according to Moore. For more information about the project, contact the city’s Community Relations Department at (586) 446-2470.
