[ARCHIVED] Annual FBI Crime Statistics reveal Sterling Heights ranks as one of the nation's safest cities

Based on Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Preliminary Crime Statistics Report released today, Sterling Heights remains one of the safest communities in the state with populations over 100,000.

According to the Report, the City of Sterling Heights experienced 26 percent less property crimes than the national average of cities with populations over 100,000. Additionally, the number of violent crimes reported in Sterling Heights in 2015 was 38 percent less than the national average of cities over 100,000.

“It is the Sterling Heights Police Department’s utmost goal to keep our residents safe and the FBI Report is confirmation that our officers are doing an excellent job,” Chief Berg said. “I’m proud that the Police Department is a catalyst for keeping Sterling Heights one of the safest large cities in the United States.”

“Overall, robberies, property crimes, burglaries, larcenies, motor vehicle theft, and arson were down over prior year numbers,” said Police Chief John Berg. “Sterling Heights came in the lowest for large cities in a number of reported crime categories, including robberies and property crimes.”

The City did experience five homicides in 2015, which followed consecutive years of no reported homicides. Chief Berg noted that 2015 was an anomaly for this crime category, but confirmed that in every case, the perpetrator was arrested and convicted.

“This data validates our standing as a very safe community,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “We are proud of the officers who demonstrate daily the hard work and professionalism that produces such excellent results.”
