The City of Sterling Heights recently revamped its Public Art Program and plans to unveil a number of murals throughout the City in 2018.
The first of its kind was recently installed on the back of the Sterling Heights Public Library in the Children’s Garden. The City is coordinating a reception to mark the official completion of the mural at 6 p.m. on June 19.
The City’s Community Relations Department ran a design contest this spring, encouraging anyone to submit a design for consideration for the Library’s mural. More than 30 designs were received, and the City’s Arts Commission voted at its April meeting to choose the artwork of Sterling Heights resident Kelly Gray. Gray’s submission features a nature-inspired design of children sitting along levels of an oversized bookshelf. The City then commissioned well-known Detroit muralist Elton Monroy Duran of Corpus Art, Inc. to install the mural. The result is an incredibly beautiful and colorful addition to the Library’s much-loved Children’s Garden.
On Tuesday, June 19, Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor, members of City Council, both artists and members of the Arts Commission will be present for a ribbon cutting and brief reception to honor the first mural’s completion. All media, residents and members of the greater Sterling Heights area community are invited to celebrate the new artwork.
As the City of Sterling Heights continues to grow its increasingly impressive public art collection, the City’s IT Department created an app called “Art Map” that uses GIS technology to identify the location of all major pieces of public art commissioned by the City in an easy-to-use digital format. The Art Map is accessible by visiting www.sterling-heights.net/artmap or by downloading the City of Sterling Heights’ phone app Sterling Connect in the Apple, Android or Google Play store.
