On Monday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m., the City of Sterling Heights will hold a ribbon-cutting event to open the brand new Sterling Heights Employee Health & Wellness Center
The new facility will provide access to primary and preventive healthcare to City of Sterling Heights employees and their dependents, covered by the City’s health plan. This new Health & Wellness Center is the launch of a collaborative partnership by the City of Sterling Heights and Tennessee-based industry pioneer and innovator in onsite healthcare, CareHere.
The Sterling Heights Employee Health & Wellness Center will offer primary care services with no copayments, no deductibles, and no costs for on-site generic medications. This type of cost savings is an obvious benefit to employees and their families. Perhaps just as important, this innovative model has a proven track record of a significant reduction of the employer’s overall healthcare dollars spent, an important savings for the taxpayers of Sterling Heights. A similar CareHere center called “MiLife” opened up at the City of Madison Heights in 2015 and currently also serves employees from the Cities of Royal Oak and Ferndale.
Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool said the City currently spends about $17 million each fiscal year on employee healthcare. Conservative estimates predict the City of Sterling Heights could save about $500,000 on medical claims costs in the first three years of the new Health & Wellness Center’s operation and more than $3 million over 10 years. The Sterling Heights Employee Health & Wellness Center is predicted to break even in terms of cost in its second year — and increase cost savings thereafter.
“It really is a win-win for both taxpayers and employees,” Vanderpool said. “By choosing to attend the clinic for healthcare needs, employees are able to reduce their out-of-pocket costs and save time by visiting the doctor during work hours. In addition, the City controls its healthcare costs. We also see it as a retention and recruitment tool of employees as well. The center affords easy access to convenient healthcare for the employee’s entire family.”
CareHere will oversee and manage the operations of the facilities. Patients can schedule appointments online or over the phone. Appointments are never double-booked, so there is little or no wait time, enabling City of Sterling Heights employees to be served quickly, feeling better fast, and back to work quickly.
