[ARCHIVED] Early Morning House Fire Results in Fatality

In the early morning of April 2, 2019, at approximately 4:30, the Sterling Heights Fire
Department was alerted to a house that was on fire in the 42000 block of Hanks Lane.

Upon arrival of Firefighters from Station 5, they found the ranch style house well involved in fire. They were alerted that an elderly woman lived alone at the house and was not accounted for.

Fire crews entered the structure to control the fire and search for the victim. The 93 year old female was quickly located and removed by Firefighters. Treatment from other Firefighters on the scene was immediately begun and she was rushed to William Beaumont Troy Emergency Room. She was later pronounced dead.

Fire Investigators believe that the cause of the fire was an unattended cooking accident, which quickly spread throughout the home. The victim was attempting to escape the fire when she was overcome. There were also two cats that perished in the fire. No other injuries were reported.


According to Fire Chief Chris Martin, “Our thoughts are with the family as they struggle with this tragedy”.
