Major Road Projects:

M-53 Resurfacing 18 Mile to 26 Mile Road (MDOT)

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a $16.5M project in March on M-53 between 18 Mile Road and M-59. The project will include major work on ten bridges on the northbound and southbound M-53 structures at the following locations:

 M-53 over Utica Road

  • Clinton River Road over M-53
  • M-53 over the Clinton River
  • M-53 over 19 Mile Road
  • M-53 over Canal Road

The project will also include milling and paving a 1½” asphalt overlay of the entire M-53 roadway pavement within the project limits. Lastly, the project will include sidewalk construction in two areas. Sidewalk will be constructed on the south side of M-59 to eliminate the sidewalk gap between Sterritt Street and the M-59 bridge over M-53. Additionally, sidewalk will be constructed on the north side of Clinton River Road to eliminate the sidewalk gap from Henry Ford II High School to 19 Mile Road. A pedestrian walkway will be constructed on the Clinton River Road bridge containing a vehicular separated barrier. See the attached maps for sidewalk construction location.

Construction will commence on southbound M-53 and the southbound roadway will be closed at M59 and detoured as Phase I of the project. Upon completion and the opening of the southbound portion of the project, northbound construction will commence and northbound M-53 will be closed at 18 Mile Road and detoured as Phase II of the project. It is anticipated all road and bridge work will be done and open to traffic early Fall 2024, and each phase will take approximately 3 months.  Additionally, a closure of Clinton River Road at M-53 will be necessary for a time during construction to work on that bridge over M53.  A short closure of the HCMA trail under M-53 will also be necessary, outside of the Sterlingfest timeframe.

17 Mile Road Bridge over Plumbrook Drain (East of Van Dyke)

The City of Sterling Heights has started a project to reconstruct the 17 Mile Road Bridge over the Plumbrook Drain.  The bridge is located a quarter mile east of Van Dyke Ave. The project will begin with clearing and bank stabilization of the Plumbrook Drain at the bridge.  The Drain work is necessary to re-establish the bank which has been eroding over time.

Upon completion of the Drain work, the road will be closed and the superstructure of the bridge will be removed.

Please be advised that the closure of 17 Mile Road for bridge construction has been delayed approximately one month due to anticipated material delivery dates.  Work continues on the bridge while two-way traffic is being maintained.  The road closure is now tenatively set to begin on February 26 and continue through late June/early July.   The road will remain closed until the new bridge is complete.  It is anticipated the bridge will be complete and the road re-opened to traffic late May/early June.  Detour routes will be posted upon the bridge closure.
