Get a Library Card

1) Apply online

Fill out our online library card application. Please note the following:

  • You will have immediate access to digital materials.
  • The application must be processed to place holds. This takes at least 24 hours. You will receive an email when it is processed and you are able to place holds.
  • To pick up your library card, you will need to provide picture ID and proof of residency at the library’s checkout desk.

2) Visit the library

You need three things to get a physical library card:

  • A completed application. Ask for one at our checkout desk.
  • Picture identification
  • Proof of Sterling Heights residency

The easiest way to provide identification and prove your residency is with a current driver’s license or a state ID that lists a Sterling Heights address. If you don’t have that, there are other options. You still need a current driver’s license or state ID, even if it’s out-of state. In addition, you will also need one of the following:

  • Electric or gas bill
  • Automobile registration
  • Rental agreement
  • Current property tax receipt

These items must show a Sterling Heights address and must be in the name of the person applying.

Cards for Minors

Anyone under the age of 18 needs to have a parent or legal guardian provide proof of residency as listed above. Both the minor and the adult must be present when submitting the library card application.

The parent or legal guardian must also have less than $25 in library fines.

Replacement Cards

If you lose your card, you may obtain a replacement for $3. If your card expired due to inactivity, you can get a new card for free. In either case, you must submit a new application.
